Stock Screener
Scan stocks, crypto, and forex markets with real-time data
Scan for relative volume, gappers and catalysts before the open. How I get from thousands of tickers to five that matter. Free stock screener.
What I Actually Scan For
Momentum. That is the whole list. I want stocks that are moving today on volume that is real, with a reason behind the move. A screener is how I get from thousands of tickers down to the five that matter before the open.
The filters that do the work
- Relative volume: today's volume against its average. A stock trading at 3 to 5 times normal volume has attention on it. Attention is what makes momentum.
- Percent change: gappers up and gappers down. I trade both sides. The Trigger Hierarchy on the short side starts with green to red and ORB down.
- Price: matched to account size. Under $10,000 I keep students in lower-priced names with tighter stops so the share count is real.
- Catalyst: earnings, news, sector move. The screener finds the mover, the news tells you whether it can keep moving.
The screener is not the entry
A stock on the list is a candidate, not a trade. The trade is still a First Pullback into the Bone Zone, an ORB, a VWAP Bounce, a Red to Green. The screener tells you where to look. The 5-minute chart tells you when. The risk calculator tells you how much.
My Daily Scanning Routine
Night before: earnings names and anything with after-hours news go on the watchlist. Pre-market: run the gappers and sort by relative volume. The top of that list is where the day usually happens. First 15 minutes: watch, do not trade. Let the ORB form. Then the Time of Day Pullback Ladder takes over, quick pullback to the 9 EMA at the open, first pullback into the Bone Zone in the morning, VWAP pullback midday.
This screener runs on TradingView data and it is free. For my full scan library and the charts I trade off, I use TC2000. Either way, the routine is the edge, not the tool.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should a day trader screen for?
Relative volume, percent change, a price range that fits your account, and a catalyst. High relative volume is the one that matters most. No volume, no momentum, no trade.
What is relative volume?
Today's volume divided by the stock's average volume over a lookback period. A reading of 3 means three times normal. That is attention, and attention is what moves momentum stocks.
When do you run your scans?
The night before for earnings and news, then pre-market for gappers sorted by relative volume. I do not trade the first 15 minutes. I watch the opening range form and then look for the pullback.
Is a stock on the screener a buy?
No. It is a candidate. The entry is still a named setup on the 5-minute chart with a stop and a size. The screener gets you to the right chart. It does not click buy for you.
